FAQs
How do you operate a walk-behind trencher?

Operating a walk-behind trencher requires several detailed steps from ground preparation to safety tips and precautions. We encourage you to always consult the equipment user manual and apply the appropriate safety measures prior to operation. However, if you still need assistance, feel free to explore our Project Uptime article on how to use a walk-behind trencher or contact your local United Rentals branch to speak with a specialist.

How much does it cost to rent a walk-behind trencher?

The cost of a walk-behind trencher rental will vary based on the model, size and the United Rentals location you rent from. Enter your location to see rental rates in your area.

Can you trench frozen ground with a walk-behind trencher?

Typically walk-behind trench diggers do not have the horsepower or torque for trenching frozen ground. Ride-on trenchers are the standard for frost-covered ground. If it is a light frost and the soil underneath is soft, a walk-behind trencher with a pointed carbide blade will be able to break up the frost. However, a walk-behind trencher may take a long time and be insufficient. See the operator’s manual and manufacturer specifications for digging depth limits.
